Designed by Cobe and completed in 2017, The Silo converts the largest industrial building in Nordhavn — a seventeen-storey grain silo that served Copenhagen's harbour for fifty years — into housing. Rather than demolish, the architects kept the raw concrete core and wrapped it in a prefabricated galvanised-steel skin whose facets fold in and out to make room for windows and terraces while acting as the building's climate screen. Cut from the former storage chambers, thirty-eight apartments, no two alike, take advantage of ceiling heights reaching seven metres; a public space at ground level and a restaurant on the top floor keep the building open to the city. A landmark visible across the harbour, it turns the district's industrial past into the starting point of its own reinvention.
