A single shell of folded concrete, free of columns and raised above a band of low windows, spans the trapezoidal nave of Marcel Breuer's Saint John's Abbey Church, bringing every seat within 85 feet of the altar. The Benedictines of Collegeville, Minnesota, chose him in 1953 from twelve modernists, though he had never built a church; construction ran from 1958 to 1961. Re-traced by hand from the north elevation, the sheet sets the 112-foot bell banner, raised on arches modelled on the base of the Eiffel Tower, before a honeycomb of 430 hexagons glazed to the design of Bronislaw Bak, whom the monks preferred to Breuer's choice, Josef Albers.
