Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard entered the New England Merchants Bank competition in December 1964 with a forty-two-storey tower for downtown Boston, and lost. This sheet records another moment in the study — an eight-storey scheme that was not carried forward, set aside before the entry itself was refused. Nothing of the project was built, so what remains of it is drawing. This is the west elevation, the face where the structure is least hidden: the massive tapering piers that carry the load, the faceted base they rise into, and the deep cornice closing the top over the mechanical floors.
