Project Info
Hubert H. Humphrey Building (Elevation) 200 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, D.C. — completed 1977 Headquarters of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Marcel Breuer's most prominent civic commission in the American capital. The building lifts off its plaza on massive sculpted piers, freeing the ground plane and presenting a deeply modelled precast façade of trapezoidal window bays — a vocabulary Breuer had developed at HUD a decade earlier and refined here into one of the defining works of late American Brutalism. Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard, architects.
