Project Info

Boston Government Service Center (Elevation) Boston, Massachusetts — completed 1971 Paul Rudolph's curving concrete megastructure on the edge of Beacon Hill, and the most ambitious civic work of his career. The elevation registers Rudolph's signature corduroy concrete — bush-hammered to expose the aggregate — wrapping a complex of state offices in a single sculpted mass intended as one wing of a still larger, never completed scheme. The unbuilt central tower remains one of the great phantom projects of American Brutalism. Paul Rudolph with Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, architects.
