Project Info

Phillips Exeter Academy Library (Perspective Section) Exeter, New Hampshire — completed 1972 Louis Kahn's library for Phillips Exeter Academy, organised around one of the most celebrated interior spaces of twentieth-century architecture: a brick cube wrapped around a concrete atrium pierced by four enormous circular openings, through which the book stacks become visible as the building's structural and symbolic core. The section reveals Kahn's diagram in full — reading carrels at the perimeter where the daylight is, books at the centre, and the great geometric voids that bind them. Awarded the AIA Twenty-five Year Award in 1997. Louis I. Kahn, architect.
