Around a vast rectangular courtyard, the so-called Mosque of Saint Athanasius arrayed file upon file of reused columns, assembled piece by piece from the ruins of ancient Alexandria. Bonaparte’s savants, who identified it as a «former basilica,» also drew the sarcophagus of Nectanebo II standing in its courtyard, turned into an ablution basin and long mistaken for the tomb of Alexander the Great. Replaced at the turn of the twentieth century by today’s Attarine Mosque, it survives only on paper.
