Project Info
Pennsylvania Station (Architectural Section) New York — completed 1910, demolished 1963 McKim, Mead & White's monument to the Pennsylvania Railroad, modelled on the Baths of Caracalla and clad in pink Milford granite. The section reveals what the street could not: a waiting room rising 150 feet beneath coffered vaults, and beyond it the great train shed of glass and steel — Beaux-Arts masonry yielding to industrial transparency in a single architectural breath. Its demolition catalysed the modern preservation movement in the United States and the founding of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Charles Follen McKim, architect.
