Project Info

Pennsylvania Station (Elevation) New York — completed 1910, demolished 1963 The Seventh Avenue façade: a Doric colonnade stretching two full city blocks, drawn from the vocabulary of imperial Rome and scaled to the ambitions of the world's most powerful railroad. Its loss in 1963 — replaced by the present subterranean concourse beneath Madison Square Garden — remains the most consequential architectural demolition in American history. "One entered the city like a god," wrote Vincent Scully; "one scuttles in now like a rat." McKim, Mead & White, architects.
